Create Text on Pastel Colored Background in Photoshop

From this short tutorial you will learn how to create awesome art Text Effect on Pastel Colored Background.
All you need to achieve the final result are default Font and two Brushes which are exclusive for Photoshop too.

This is the final result:

STEP 1

Create a new .psd document (File, New). Firstly insert a Name. I have called my file Text on Pastel Background. Set the document Width to 1200 Pixels and its Height to 700 Pixels then type 96 Pixels/Inch for Resolution. Choose RGB Color for Color Mode and Transparent for Background Contents.
If you plan to print your Text when you are ready, set the Resolution to 300 Pixels/Inch and select CMYK Color for Color Mode.
Now rename your transparent and editable Layer 1 to Background and press Ctrl+G (Layer, Group Layers) to place it in a group. Call this new group Background too.

STEP 2

We need to colorize our Background layer in this step. While it is highlighted, Set Foreground Color to #8ca7a2 then grab Paint Bucket tool and drag once on your canvas to colorize it.

STEP 3

Double click on Background layer's thumbnail to activate Layer Style dialog box (Layer, Layer Style, Blending Options). Check Inner Glow Layer Style and insert these settings: change its Blend Mode to Multiply, increase Opacity to 100%, Noise to 12% and Set Color of Glow to #fcc09b. Increase also Size to 40px and choose Sawtooth 1 for Contour.

STEP 4

The second Layer Style you have to apply on the Background layer is Inner Shadow. Set Color of Shadow to #5dd03a, reduce Distance to 0px and heighten the value of Size to 250px.

This is the Background you should get after colorizing the canvas and applying both layer styles:

STEP 5

Create a New Layer on top of Background group and name it Spatter Brush after the Brush we are going to use in this step.
Set Foreground Color to #c48d3a, select Brush tool and take any Spatter Brush from the Brush Preset Picker (I have chosen Spatter Brush of 59px Size). Increase the Brush Size to 700px and make a few dabs on your canvas.

STEP 6

Change the Blend Mode of Spatter Brush layer to Overlay.

STEP 7

Double click on Spatter Brush layer's thumbnail to call Layer Style box. Firstly we are going to texturize the Brush dabs so tick Pattern Overlay Layer Style, change its Blend Mode to Soft Light and reduce Opacity to 60%. Select Grass (200 by 200 pixels, RGB mode) default Pattern from the Pattern Picker and set its Scale to 85%.

STEP 8

Now Set Foreground Color to #2a7974. The Gradient we are going to use in this step depends on the chosen Foreground Color.
Check Gradient Overlay in Layer Style box, change its Opacity to 60%, set the Angle to 90 degrees, Scale to 80% and choose Soft Stripes Gradient from the Gradient Picker.

This is how your Background will look so far:

STEP 9

Create a New Layer on top of Background and name it Watercolor Spatter Big Drops after the second Brush we are going to use.
Change Foreground Color to #af4c78, take Brush Tool and find Watercolor Spatter Big Drops in the Brush Preset Picker. If this Brush is not exclusive for your Photoshop you can use another one of your choice or download such from the net.
Brush around the borders of your canvas until you create this awesome vignette:

STEP 10

Reduce Opacity of Watercolor Spatter Big Drops to 35%.

STEP 11

We are going to add relief to the spatterd border drops so double click on Watercolor Spatter Big Drops layer's thumbnail and apply Bevel and Emboss.

This should be the result on your canvas so far:

STEP 12

Take Horizontal Type tool (hot key T) and choose MV Boli defailt Font from Font Family drop down menu. Set the Font Size to 190pt and choose #c36a3f for Text Color. Click also on Center Text icon in your Options bar then type Text Effect with Capital Letters as you see on the screenshot below.
Highlight your Text now and click on Toggle the Character and Paragraph Panels icon in the Options bar. Set the Tracking to 100. We need this bigger tracking to avoid overlapping of the letters when we start to apply the Blending Options.
Place Text Effect layer on top of Layers panel.

STEP 13

Right click on Text Effect layer and select Blending Options. The first Layer Style to be applied is Drop Shadow.

STEP 14

Now add Outer Glow Layer Style to the Text layer.

STEP 15

The third Layer Style we have to apply on the Text Layer is Inner Glow.

STEP 16

Now add Inner Shadow to darken the borders of the Text.

STEP 17

Let us add subtle 3D Effect with the help of Bevel and Emboss.

STEP 18

The last effect we have to add to the Text is Texture. Check it in Layer Style dialog box, select Sparse Basic Noise (200 by 200 pixels, Grayscale Mode) from the Pattern Picker then set its Scale to 335% and Depth to +35%.

STEP 19

No more playing with Blending Options. If you have followed all my steps, you should have one group and one separate layer in your Layers panel:

  1. Background group which includes three layers: Background, Spatter Brush and Watercolor Spatter Big Drops and
  2. One separate Text Effect layer which I haven't rasterized on purpose. I have left it editable because you can decide to change the Font.

STEP 20

This is my result saved in .jpg format. If you like to improve the quality of the .jpg file, you can apply Filter, Sharpen, Unsharp Mask. Adjust the settings according to your taste.
